I am about to do rear brakes and saw two videos on the subject. The Ross tech video says shut ignition off after retracting the emergency brake with Vag Com. A second video says to leave it on. I would think ross tech is correct but they did it on a passat while second video was on an A6. Anyone who has info on the C6 A6 specifically would be appreciated

Can you find a service manual? I know some modern BMW and Mercedes can cost you a finger if you don't properly disable them prior to brake work.

The objective is to retract the electromechanical parking brake piston using the VAS5051 (Vag-Com in this case). Once the parking brake piston has been retracted the brake job becomes a standard event.

So turn the igntion to on (key on-engine off), select the appropriate channel on the VCDS and retract the parking brake piston. You can now unhook the VCDS, turn the car off, etc., and proceed with the mechanic of pushing the brake piston in with a caliper tool and replacing the brakes.
