Old Microguard FIlter Cut Open

Here's an old microguard filter off a 2.4l Grand Am. The car wasn't exactly maintained (the filter was on there long enough that the can was getting rusty):


The fiber end caps stayed intact, and there weren't any tears in the wavy media:


Obviously I'm not saying anyone should treat their cars this way, I was just kinda surprised this stupid filter held together.

Watching this has made me think that a lot of the [censored] stuff about the Orange Can is just a lot of [censored yet again]. Cardboard end caps seem to be not much of an issue.
 
I think fiber end caps are OK as long as they are thick enough to provide adequate rigidity and stay flat, and the glue stays intact over the life of the filter. A good example of fiber end caps that are pretty thick on the ones used on Honda OEM filters.

No, it was pretty stiff. It still held some oil in it though.
