What would be recommended for this car with this engine.

I would use any 15w-40 diesel oil since its non-turbo and synthetic wouldn't be fully utilized.

I was thinking 15W-40 or HD 30. Probably Delo.

I would use the 15w-40. Thicker at temp and better cold pumpability.

GutsyGecko

Can you please advise why a synthetic wouldn't be fully utilised in this engine.

A synthetic would actually be better for wintertime cold starts (not that the OP would need it in AL), but you'll be topping off a lot. I used M1 TDT in my 300D when I first got it to loosen rings, but it used a lot when I did it.

Any 15w-40 will be fine year round for this vehicle in your climate, and likely was the most widely recommended grade according to the manual.

This is the 1989-1991 Audi viscosity chart, for reference:

Blue bottle Rotella 5w-40 or Silver bottle Rotella T5 10w-30
I don't think 15w-40 is really warranted unless it decides to use either of these.
