Did an oil change on my friends car, had higher miles on the oil/filter so figured it would be a great filter to cut into.

Car, 2001 Corvette with 150K miles
Oil Royal Purple
Miles on filter 14,000
Car has had 4-5 Track days in those 14,000 miles

Looks like 14K may be a little long in your friend's case. Thanks for the photo.

Filter looks very good for 14k miles. If someone likes to reuse filter for 2 8-10k OCI then M1 Extended Performance filter will be able to do it.

Seems impressive to me, but what do I know. I just think its impressive that it is still holding up. How to know if it is at capacity though?

How much time was it installed for?

From Pics I have seen many Mobil 1 Oil Filters ** Not ALL ** have the same bypass set up as FRAM... but many do and as you can see from pic its A leaf spring at the bottom of the oil can with the bypass built in with another spring.

here is a pic

perhaps it might be a better plastic then FRAM and Im not saying the FRAM bypass is bad...
Im just making a point.

This M1 filter look excellent to me! Nice straight pleats, and the media seems nice and thick/robust!

IDK about running any filter 14K miles as I have never tried it but, the filter still looks good. smile

It looks pretty good for 14K.

Did he run the Royal Purple for 14K as well?

14k miles with 4 or 5 track days is excessive use on the oil. But the filter did well.

I know M1 filters have different bypass designs depending on model. M1-209 has a "front end" bypass, like many Wix, using a spring. Avoids flowing oil across the dirty media in bypass mode.

No doubt it was an extended change even more so with the track days. But it is what it is. He knows it should have been changed sooner. We get a good sample of a filter out of it so that's always a good thing.

He said oil was not changed but he did add about a quart In top offs.

As for time, 7 months or so of driving. The other 5 were with the car sitting on jack stands since his coil over snapped. Had to wait for them to warranty the part. That took forever. Once the new part came in I installed it for him and did the oil while I was under the car.

So while it was a year. It sat without being run for almost half of that time.

Any idea what the Oil Life Monitor showed on the car at the many miles on the oil. The OLM system will take into account how the car is driven, so track days would have knocked off more oil life percentage than cruising down the highway at 60 MPH.

Just looking at it may not be an accurate way - unless of course it filled up with sludge, etc while being on a very dirty engine. The only accurate way to know would to be able to measure the delta-p across the filter in real time while being used on the car.

The "plastic" (high temperature nylon composite) in both filter brands is specified for the high temperature oil environment they are designed for.

There has never been any reports of "plastic" bypass valves that look defective after a filter cut-open.
