Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a 2008 Nissan versa - during hard braking my car has developed a grinding noise - no usual vibration associated with warped rotors - just a strange deep grinding noise.

The front rotors and pads are 20,000kms old and look brand new.
The rear drums and shoes are original and have 150,000kms on them.

The noise sounds like the front - but I guess ot could also be the rear, hard to pin point.

The grinding is only during hard stops above 80km/h.

Any ideas before I take er in?
Thanks
Nick

Could be rust, or or a worn pad. Or it could be sliders stuck, or a bad caliper, causing pads to drag and premature wear.

Try driving for a few miles, then see if one wheel feels hotter than the rest.

Find a large empty parking lot. Drive slowly about 20kmh, pull the E brake up slightly until you feel drag.
Listen for any noise as you increase the E brake.
This will help determine if it's the front or rear causing issues..

Good luck..

I was just thinking the same as R00B that it might be dust buildup in the drums on the back - OTW maybe some rust on perimeter of the Rotors at the wear ridge.

If you have to replace the rear brake shoes, I suggest replacing the springs and wheel cylinders. Sometimes those items fail in middle of the life of the new brake shoes. Other times, the moment the drum is taken off, springs fall apart, especially if you live where road salt is used.
