You have no rational basis for that suggestion.
It's obviously a factor ... every instance where the pleats tore where the pleats on each side of the seam that were very widely spaced out. If it wasn't a factor (along with other factors), then you'd probably also see tears in pleats that weren't spread out that wide.
I think you're the type of guy that needs some kind of measured proof for everything in life. Others with engineering logic can look at a failure and easily come up with some pretty solid reasons why it's happening. I'd bet if Purolator started manufacturing the filters with the pleats space nice and even around the whole filter that you'd never see any more torn media, even if the media material make-up was also a factor in this failure issue.
