Restrictive Wix air filter

The Wix filter for my f250 comes with a foam outer wrap. But it seems to be very restrictive. I'm cleaning the wrap every 4-5 weeks! It gets so plugged that my air filter gauge gets sucked into the change filter zone, power goes down and black smoke goes up.

Even when the wrap is clean it sucks the gauge down 1/3 of the way. Any reason to not pull the wrap off? Everytime I open it up to clean it I let dirt in I'm sure

why do you think you are letting dirt in? I am not familiar with that trucks air filter....but in every car/truck I have ever dealt with if you are careful you are not going to let junk into the intake.

I would remove the wrapper to see how the air filter gauge behaves.

Is it supposed to function as a pre-filter, or is it exclusively an 'anti-frost' type device like on some of the Mahle Euro app filters??

If it's plugging your prefilter that fast, its going to plug your regular filter pretty quick too. The pre filter is only doing you favors if you don't mind cleaning it.

Diesels do not like restricted air filters, thats for sure. Gas engines don't really care.

truck aint got a turbo

Maybe try a donaldson EAF5187? That's what I'm running and so far it seems like a better filter than the paper ones Ive ran before.
