Did the oil Change a week ago, couple days back drove a self tapping screw into the dome end, and drained the oil within(Nextgen Conv. 5w30), which was sent for a UOA. should be interesting.
Let it drain a couple more days, then tonight got out my Hi-Tech Filter cutter, a plain olD crank can opener i picked up @ Dollar General.

Filter Media Felt Hard, almost "set up" ala Concrete.
Notice the Pleats on Both Sides of the Seam are Torn loose from the Glue. but that seems to be the only tearing...
If anyone is familiar with/can decode Purolators stamped code on the end of the can to tell when this was made, etc it's :

I just put a P1 on my vehicle recently... I'm wondering if I should just swap it out and top off the new oil..

What model number is the P1 filter.

Keep us posted on the UOA. I really want to know what the insoluble reading is. I have 2500 miles on my P1 now and may need to change it...

It will be good to see the UOA.

Bet it's fine.

It will be just as good as a FRAM Ultra for the same period.

You need to check the definition of failure.

A tire that is well worn at the end of its service life hasn't failed.

Has anyone seen a P1 with tears that didn't have a metal crimped seam?
It seems to me that there isn't enoug flexibility, also seems like this would make a case for fiber end caps on non long drain oil filters, although I've always thought P1 were good for 10k miles.
I'm still gonna use the P1's I have but won't be buying more, plus all the ones I've cut had no tears but had glued seem too.

I highly doubt you will see any problems with an unused P1. The tears occur during service. The force against those spaced out pleats from the oil flow tries to bend them over flat and that caused the pleats to tear at the base where they are glued to the end cap.

Yes, from all the torn media reports posted here, it certainly seems the filters with the metal crimped seam have the problem.

Re SwedishRider's Puro 10241: I was just mentioning today with a friend. With the number of "10241" filters I've changed on all the family's Saabs I've noticed that an ACDelco equivalent ALWAYS does a good job holding back a flood of "engine block oil".

In other words, the ADB valve appears to be working. I like ACDelcos more now.

I fully realize the unscientific nature of my report. Kira

Hmmm, any idea if the PL14670 and PL30001 are susceptible to this? If so, I might pick up something else next time around for the Jeep.

i always thought they were just too restrictive... I stopped buying anything made by purolator at the shop and my filter guy agrees with me..he is the largest distributor in oil filters and says a few have asked him about the tearing in purolator and he now sells a better made filter

After my recent tearolator failure. I've seen enough. I'm taking the P1 off my car tomorrow. I just can't take looking at all these media failures anymore. On goes the Ultra first thing in the morning. Too bad since the P1 has only been on for 900 miles. I'll think of it as the "free" one I got from PB's last year.

They really aren't very restrictive ... I've posted the thread with the Purolator Flow vs PSID data about 50 times now.

Purolators Are Not Restrictive Thread

Yes, pull it out of there and put an orange can back in it's place.
