After using my 'spare' sump pump for 1 Week, I decided to make some improvements.

I will do anything to keep water out of the basement.

Currently using a Wayne 1/2 HP (11 years old)
Current spare is 45 year old pedestal

Improvements are:
1) Bought another Wayne 1/2 HP / Set up and ready to go into action
2) Wired in a 20 amp dedicated breaker for pump
3) Wired in a 'On/Off Switch' that can be reached while standing on the stairs
4) Bought replacement pump Switch (common problem part)
5) Bought a super quiet check valve. No more clunking sound.

Previous Improvements:
1) Made an Alarm using 'pressure switch' from washing machine.
This uses a 12 volt battery & piezo Siren
2) Bought a plastic (not cast iron) hand pump
3) Bailing buckets
4) And of coarse, Generator with Transfer Switch

Make sure to periodically cycle the float and make sure the system is working properly.

Don't ask how I know. Luckily, I got home in time to fire up the generator. 10 minutes later and I would have had a wet basement.

i found a easy way to make a water alarm. use a Fire Sentry smoke alarm. i9040, W/M. just wire the test points to a wire when water touches the two wires it goes off. i found this mod on the internet.
