What was Ford thinking?

Porsche used this setup for many years. Maybe a Porsche enthusiast or engineer can tell a story about why the key is often on the left.

One thing that was different about older Fords was that some ignition switches required you to push a button before you could get your key out of the ignition.

It was a throwback to the old style Le Mans start where the drivers ran across the front stretch to a car with an open door and drove off. Having the ignition on the left made the process faster while they could use their right hand to hold the gear shift lever or pretend to put the seat belts on.
