I have had this car for a year now. Never ever never a rattle or peep coming from the back left strut tower. My friend owned it before me and the struts all around are new as of last June. This weekend I took the wheel off in order to treat some rust within the fender well. Finished up, reinstalled wheel and now hearing a rattle from that area every time a hit a bump or depression in the road. It will do it going fast or even if I’m idling along really slow backing or going forward. I was able to isolate the noise by having someone push down on the back of the car while I put my ear right up to the wheel/fender well. So I took the wheel off again to inspect the strut and I don’t know much about them but wanted to see if there was anything obvious. Found nothing. Reinstalled the wheel and drove it and it seemed to do it a little and now it completely stopped. Is it possible that I may not have had the wheel properly seated and lugs tightened correctly? If so, could the wheel and not the strut make that noise even when in park and compressing the back of the vehicle putting pressure on that area?

I wonder if you topped out the strut with the wheel off and that created the noise. I guess you could keep driving it and see if it works out.

topped out? what does that mean happened exactly? something with the mount? Could it reseat itself?

less severe. one would almost think the back dash is rattling until you go to the back of car and push down on the trunk..then you hear it from the wheel well

Were the strut mounts replaced or just the strut?

Yes...and the car has also been religiously kept up on for undercoating treatments...not that it could not have rusted I guess. But yes, new mounts were put in at time of install. Just got back from lunch. It’s raining out. If the problem is still there I’m not sure if moisture would mask it or not. But it was dry this morning and the sound was gone. This was after I had taken the wheel off last night and reinstalled the factory alloy wheel.

Well Mark, the strut could be bad. i know you said it was changed not long ago, but it's possible.

I had a problem like this, after eliminating other causes like trim and strut mount, later discovered that the shock itself was bad. There was air in the hydraulic cylinder, so there was a little bit of play before the valving would
'hammer' against the hydraulic fluid. i presume more air got in where hydraulic fluid should have been because it got progressively worse. Within that small amount of play that the air caused, the shock was uncontrolled and would "jiggle hammer" from the spring's resonance.

Not saying this is your issue, but I at the time found it a bit of a cluster---- of unlikeliness and worth sharing.
