I know you're super proud of the Subaru's performance since you own one, but how exactly is that the "key" point? The Subaru is in the small SUV class and the Equinox/Terrain are in the midsize SUV class. In other words, their performance is not directly comparable to each other.

You left out the part where the author states that was from a different test, of a different class of car, done last year.

There really aren't any surprises here. The better performers are the new(er) models, many of which were designed with this test in mind, and the ones that don't do as well are the oldest (CX-9 and Pilot) which predate introduction of this test by several years. As those models are redesigned you can expect them to cycle to the top of the list.

Among small SUV's 2014 Nissan Rogue, 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2014 Mazda CX-5 also earned a good rating.

The current generation of Equinox has been out since 2009 as a 2010 model.

Good post.

The mfgrs know about these tests and rapidly flex their engineering muscle so they can promote with the results in their ads.

Expect parity...

Yes but GM made structural improvements specifically for this test for the '14 model. That suggests to me, since the model has been relatively successful for them, that they may extend the model run on the current platform more than the typical 5-6 years. Brand new Pilots and CX-9s will be on dealer lots by the end of this year. I'm certain, especially for the upcoming Pilot, that it will perform at the top of its class as the new MDX has (likely the same for the upcoming CX-9).
