We have a really good painter at the local Maaco. The big money is spent on labor and materials. For example, paint and materials can cost over 300 alone. If you do your own prep work (must use a D/A "dual action" type sander or you'll have sanding marks all over the place). I used to use a d/a, then block it off with a hand block and fine wet sandpaper to give the finished job a perfect look. Also, fix all dings and dents. They are more noticeable with fresh glossy paint.
