When you say, "never owned any", are you referring to Malwarebytes only, or are you saying that you don't have any kind of anti-virus?
If you don't have Malwarebytes or something equivalent that you can scan with, how do you know you don't have either viruses or malware on your computer? Just curious.
Viruses and malware can come from anywhere. Recently it was discovered that a computer virus could be transmitted via wifi!
Researchers show wifi networks can be infected like a human virus There are bots, trawling the web constantly looking for open ports. Use a usb stick to bring work home? Hope your work computer is clean, and the list goes on.
Sites you consider to be "Fairly Secure", aren't. The largest banks get hacked, the federal government gets hacked, small innocuous sites get hacked and once hacked they're compromised.
No computer should be without security. It's not whether or if, but when you will get infected. The good old days of going without, or having inadequate security on your computer are gone, at least on a Windows machine. Well, the Mac community has found out they're not invulnerable either.
The extra second it takes to load your favorite browser or the extra few seconds it takes to boot your computer are a small price indeed for a higher level of security.
I would also add, once infected the only cleaning method I know of that's certain is a reinstall of your OS and software. I've seen instances of folks spending many days of running cleaners, hijack this logs, doing registry edits etc. But they're never actually certain they got everything and often give up in frustration and do a reinstall in the end anyway.
I apologize for going on too long, but it's something I believe is important, because even if an infection doesn't manifest itself on your computer you might be being used as a host to infect others.
