sand in overflow reservoir

Wow this blew my mind but upon googling it, it seems common. I saw it on my rubber tube in the reservoir today. I plan to clean the tank out tomorrow.

This exactly. That is why a bunch of the 6.0 diesel guys run coolant filters, amongst some other reasons.
 
Jeep has the problem too. Casting sand, and issues with OAT and HOAT coolant being mixed together by mistake. Ford. as already mentioned has/had the problem too. I would have thought in this day and age the car makers would have learned how to get casting sand out of parts that are cast in sand.

Some of the sand is what is called "burned-in" sand. Most of the sand is removed during the shaking and cleaning during production. But some of it can be tenacious and may only get removed during the chemical reactions that occur over time.
