Will it Hurt To Mix 30w with 10w30?

I have two extra jugs of Rotella 30w I bought on clearance.

Will it hurt to mix one jug of the 30w with an additional 4 quarts of 10w30?


This is going into my old inline-6 motor on the 1951 truck...which takes 8 quarts.

It won't hurt at all.

No problem mixing. It will raise the cold cst, and possibly the hot. You would have to calculate the new viscosities to see the exact effect. But for your use, you could run the 30 weight this summer, and switch back to the multigrade for cooler weather.

1) Mixed 30 with 10-30 in varying amounts
2) Ran straight 30
3) Even ran straight 40 (Im in TX summer and oil was almost free)

My 1997 Chevy truck never...even...noticed.


Your '51 model will be more than fine with any of the above.
