When I worked and went to school in NJ, I loved having my gas pumped for me. It was especially nice during inclement weather.

The attendants would always let me fill my motorcycle though.

And even with full service, the gas was quite a bit cheaper than it was in NY where I lived.

ETA - It also seemed like the vast majority of pump jockeys were middle-aged Middle Eastern guys. From the time I spent working for Phillip Morris, it seems like a very high percentage of gas stations are owned by Middle Easterners (or possibly Indian/Paki). My guess is that said pump jockeys were the owners or relatives thereof.

So are you trying to say that a large percentage of gas pump attendants in Oregon are not drug addicted, unqualified trash, who both don't care about their job, and don't know how to do it well in the first place? Yeah, sure, they aren't all like that, but a lot of them truly are.

The only reason for this law is to create jobs for people who just can't get a job otherwise. The reason they can't get any other job is most of them aren't qualified to flip burgers and can't pass a drug test. Many of them are so bad I don't feel secure giving them my credit card to pay for the fuel.

You don't appear to be from Oregon so you wouldn't know.

Why does any of that mean they don't deserve a job? Do you think they deserve to starve because you disapprove of them?

Let me put it this way.

Some people just don't deserve a job. They are trash of their own making. They don't want to work, and any money they make goes to drugs, booze, or porn. You know these people are out there. In Oregon we have a law that creates jobs for them. In other states they don't get a job because they haven't earned one.

No, not every single person that works at a gas station is this way. Too many are. We don't need a law to create jobs for these people, I don't feel sorry for them. Why don't we make it illegal to do your own grocery shopping too, I'm sure there are more losers that need jobs created for them. Or maybe it should be illegal to wash your car?

I'm picking on the gas station attendants because they are forced upon me by law, and the local gas stations don't seem to do a very good job of screening employees. I know there are a lot of qualified hard working people out there that don't have jobs, but most of them wouldn't even apply for this job if they were starving. This law creates a really bad poor quality low paying job doing a service we don't really even need.

I've learned living my entire life in Oregon, that in general, you can't trust a gas pump attendant to do anything correctly. Sorry if that gives a bad name to a few good attendants. If I get out and do it myself I am breaking the law.

I live in one of the few surprisingly rural parts of NJ. As long as the pump doesn't need the attendants card to start the pump I've not had problems if I want to pump my own fuel. Our fuel prices are less than self service states around us so why complain? And yes, even being from NJ I'm able to pump my own gas when I travel out of state
