So here is an Australian filter brand Ryco filter dissection. Thought id make an account and put this in here as i had yet to find a post of a Ryco. The Z9 is 40um @ an unknown efficiency level and is equivalent to Motorcraft AFL1 (Australian part number) and FL1A (American part number)

Filter was used with Penrite HPR30 mineral 20w60 oil for 4599km, Driving style was harsh, some highway to the track then run at the drags. in a NA 250ci 6 cylinder Australian ford crossflow engine. The oil suffered some breakdown/reduced viscosity after the car was run at the drags and has since been changed to a full syn.

The filter was well built, the can was of reasonable thickness (sorry did not measure). It used a coil spring type and silicone ADBV. The filter has steel ends and the bypass valve is in the top of the filter end cap.
Filter medium is paper, the pleats are evenly distributed and all straight. With a steal crimp joining the medium. There is no gap in the glue that connects the end caps and no signs of abnormal wear or failure of any part/component.
The filter is well built and i could not fault it. Cost less than $10Aus.

Looks like a well build filter. Wow, 20W-60 is pretty viscous. What weight are you running in the full synthetic?

Wow looks like a very well made filter. It does remind me of an FL-1a.

As always, thanks for cutting and posting!

Bump !!

Hey, thanks for posting. There seems to be a limited selection of over the counter oil filters available in Australia, but you can get Ryco most places (like Super Cheap Auto), so I was wondering how good they were.

You have just answered my question, they look quite good to me. I feel less worried.

Repco also sell their own brand of filters, but I have heard they are just rebranded Ryco filters. Does anybody know if that is true or not?

For some reason I used to think ryco were [censored] too, probably because they shifted production offshore. However after cutting one open that was on mum's car I was pretty happy with them. Just not too happy about the prices that some retail outlets charge for them *cough*supercheap*cough*

Reminds me of a European built Mann+Hummel FL-1A. Good looking filter.

The "non US" brands are cool.

Thanks Shannow, very good to know.

So the SCA filters and the Ryco filters both look good.

Hmmmmm….pity I just picked up a few REPCO filters.

On the other thread you said " I'm on rinse phase now, and have some cheapish 15W-40 mixed fleet in it for a few 2,000km changes."

So how did that go? Did it clean up the engine?

Seeya,
SR5
