Have the same dimensions other being about .4" longer. Not a lot of other alternatives out there unless you want to use an incorrect gasket dia.

BlueOvalFitter - Is the ST filter Wal-Mart sells a good brand to use?

I have no personal experience with them but there are many on this board who claim that are just fine, some claim they are better than average.

Now there's value-conscious shoppper. I use the walmart oil, but superstion still has me using Purolator or AC Delco filter. I think I'm going to try one of those walmart filters and cut it open later and have a comparison checky-checky. My 72 Valiant is a way to get around, but I want the engine to last. I'm not in love with it and got better things to do than worry about the oil.

ST filters are made for Wally*World by Champion Labs (Lee). They're advertised as using a "Special synthetic fiber enhanced filtration media" and list the filtering efficiency in graph form on the cartons. The bar graph representation for the "Leading Brand" that ST claims to edge out just happens to use an orange background color - pure coincidence, I'm sure... Champion Labs is also a supplier to AC as well as U.S. Bosch. K&N oil filters are also reputed to be made by Champion Labs. Anyway, I've used STs for several years now and have had no reason to regret my choice. There're undoubtedly better oil filters for those eager to pay the bucks, but I've found nothing substandard about STs in performance and general build quality compared to other standard grade aftermarket filters. Wally*World has deep pockets, so I doubt the retailer would knowingly market something inferior under their own brand name.

Here is some data from filters I have used on my 77 Chevy LUV. Some of it is older, and some from a year ago. Interesting that newer examples of all 3 brands had less filter area. The Miata filter is from my boy's car. It was much smaller than the rest which were all the same size outside with a t 3:1 variation. The tiny Miata filter still had more filter area than the Fram. I have seen data from other applications where the rankings were different, but ST is usually good and Fram bad.

2 conclusions, don't judge a filter by its size, and if I can't find an AC, I may as well use the ST.
