Payload is dictated by leaf springs and axles, and the frame to a lesser extent.
That's why a 1/2 ton is always going to be around a 6k pound truck give or take a bit. You can get a light base model with lots of carrying capacity, or a loaded plush one and use that capacity for options and big cabs.
GM has cheated a bit in the past and I think Dodge had a cheater truck until last year. IE it was a 3/4 chassis and axle combo under a half ton body, ie the 1500HD in Silverado guise and Dodge Tradesman if I remember correctly.
If you want a good ride your limited to a 1/2 suspension and what it can carry.
