And some people say UOAs are worthless. It looks like the intake manifold gaskets I had replaced before the first UOA (95.6K) are leaking or I have another situation on my hands. I ran this oil up to almost 11K and was in for right at 12 months. The 1.5qt make up was not because the car burns it but rather it leaks out of the oil pan (gasket). It had a Fram Ultra filter, very impressed by it. Refilled with 5w20, 3qts M1 HM and 1.25qts PP I had left over and put on a FL901s. Knowing this now, I will have to limit my OCIs to 3K and switch to conventional to monitor the oil. I liked this oil as well, it cleaned up the engine nicely compared to what it use to look like. There was some varnish but that seemed to be reduced.

Could it be that your intake manifold gasket was fine all along, and you have a HG failure instead?

Head gasket tested fine at the time of the pressure test. The intake gaskets were visibly leaking.

Could you elaborate on this? I know the waterpump and timing cover leak on the vulcans.

For 10k over a full year on an engine leaking coolant, I'd say the oil did great.

I'll second that it might be HG's. Bill in Utah has a well-documented thread on here about going it thru it twice on a Vulcan-powered Taurus.

I got lucky with mine!

When I first started driving (and didn't know that much about cars ...) the thermostat on mine stuck shut. It would run so hot it would just spark knock worse and worse. Problem was, it never indicated on the gauge cluster that it was overheating or even running slightly warm.

Once I realized the thing was severely overheated and replaced the thermostat, it still pinged pretty bad. 4 years later turns out it was a bad DPFE that never set a check engine light. It was always "bad" enough to cause the car to run lean and ping, not enough to set a check engine light.

Never had head gasket problems.

That's impressive TBN considering its more than double the manufacturer oci.

And it seems the oil capacity is 4.5qts vs about 6 for later years.

Vulcans are easy on oil. Without the coolant it's an easy 15k with Edge. They are 4.5 quarts on most of the Vulcans I know, maybe your thinking of the DOHC variants?

That's what will happen when you dump antifreeze, which is basic, into the oil. In this case TBN is useless in determining the condition of the oil due to contamination.

There isn't that much coolant in the oil. Edge has shown to have outstanding TBN retention. Plus 1.5qts of make up oil helped, so who knows that the actual TBN is but I'd wager to say the coolant didn't add much to the TBN value.

Maybe we should ask tig to switch to Castrol and attempt 20k mile oci's?

That would leave him more Mobil 1 to pour on his Cheerios anyway!

Another impressive showing for Edge Gold bottle IMO. It always seems to resist shear extremely well. I am not surprised the OP also noted some cleaning, I am of the recent opinion that the Magnesium add pack oils clean exceptionally well.

Whats the average repair bill on one of those? I'll probably just take a weekend and do it myself when it gets to the point of repair.

I don't remember the cost, but I do remember that having the heads sent to an automotive machinist to be rebuilt and have new exhaust manifold studs was a big part of the price, and couldn't be skipped.
