My brother has asked me to do the rear brakes on his 2008 Saturn Vue, it's an XE with the 4 cylinder engine. Pads and rotors seem to run from $125 for Wearever platinum with Advance's current promotion to ~$155 for AC Delco rotors and Akebono ceramic pads from Amazon.

My question is if there are any peculiarities of this car's brakes that I should know about before the job. Anything odd about the parking brake? Weird pistons like my 2006 Accord? Thanks,

jeff

i found that rockauto had better prices that advanced auto even with all of their promotions. On top of that, rockauto carries raybestos professional grade and advanced does not. I went with raybestos for my pads and rotors and am very happy with them.

I checked Rockauto, Raybestos pro grade rotors and pads were $140 delivered. I think I'm going to go with the Wearever Platinum rotors from Advance and the Akebono ProACT pads (best pads going IMO) from Amazon, total price also $140, but I'll also get a $25 off coupon for a future $50 purchase with Advance.

I quite like the Raybestos AT rotors for my Accord, unfortunately Rockauto doesn't have them for the Vue.

Rock auto can be hit or miss sometimes. Between coupons and rebates etc you can find great deals locally. I use rockauto a lot for oil filters for bulk purchase as well as harder to find OEM parts (always cheaper than the dealership.) Akebonos are good stuff. I would stick with them too!

They are a very simple brake design. Your biggest challenge, if any, will be seized fasteners.

A can of pb blaster or aerokroil and you are good to go.

It's probably cheaper to get pads and rotors from aap and use the $50 off $125+ coupon. 45+45+77-50=117+tax

Outstanding! Thanks, I was using the code on the Advance page but found the WD2 code here on the AAP deals thread, thanks. Added two cans of brake cleaner BOGO for a total price after taxes of $125.

I am not sure if this car has caliper pistons with threads, but if it does, having a brake caliper piston tool is a huge advantage.

Just did the job today, it was quite straightforward aside from the caliper mounting frame bolts on the driver's side being very tight. The car does not have the threaded type pistons (assuming you're talking about what our '06 Accord has with the shape on the face for a cross-shaped tool to turn it?) so my regular caliper piston tool worked. From walking out to the garage to being finished cleaning up the tools took ~2 hours.
