Did a little reading at work today about some 5w-30s shear down close to 5w-20. So if a car specs 5w-20 recommended, but 5w-30 can be used (higher temps etc), why not just go and stick with 5w-30 if it shears toward 5w-20 since 5w-20 is the most recommended if it specs for it.

Thinking in terms of GDI & dilution - specs 5w-20 and dilution compared to 5w-30 and dilution.

That's what I would do, but that's just me. Better a little too thick than a little too thin.

I wonder if we know what oil-engine combinations, that holds true for? Would not the company engineers know that when making their oil change recommendations? One thing I do know from my owners manual is that 0w20 in a recommendation in USA & Canada only and 5w30 elsewhere. Ed

Yap, going from 5W30 to 5W20 is very similar to Dexron III to VI transition. Should be backward compatible in most (but not all) applications.

Not all cars shear and not at 5w-30s shear, so grain of salt on those broad generalizations.

"some" is the operational word there.

I had a mess with some charts and numbers a few days ago...
