Why would the by-pass being stuck open cause a spun bearing, unless it was stuck closed and oil starvation when cold was the culprit.
Any more info on this?

The relief on the pump being stuck open meant significantly reduced oil volume to the engine. What could go out the relief went out the relief.
The pump was maintaining pressure while oil was cold. But as the oil began heat up and thin, the pressure dropped because the pump was bypassing so much internally effectively starving the engine.
I posted pics of the pump with the stuck open valve earlier in the thread.
