Leaking freeze plug?? Clean it REALLY well, and coat the whole [censored] area with JB Weld. This is of course assuming that this is an engine that you don't plan to, or care to rebuild. Even then, it should be fine.

Would have tried that first except you can't get anywhere near the freeze plugs without removing the engine or tranny.

Really? I expect two minutes at half throttle is all an engine can take with no coolant in the head without sustaining permannent damage. Two minutes will take you a mile if you do not stop at all.
