Excellent gallery and pics! I was unaware the Motorcraft and Wix were identical. I had heard and read numerous times that Motorcraft filters were made by Purolator but those pics sure seem to suggest Wix is the supplier.

Thanks for posting this.

Interesting I think you've found some exeptions to the rule. I have never seen a Motorcraft that was not a purolator, and I've never seen a purolator quite like that. What is the application? I think the fitler your using is quite different than most.

This is the reason for bypass filtration.. spin on filters do a poor job of it. The best a spin on filter can do is filter down to 15 microns which lets in to many contaminates into your engine. A bypass filter such as the Frantz or Gulfcoast (Which use the same element.. Toilet Paper) believe it or not can filter your oil down to 1 micron! Therefore keeping your oil 100% clean all the time! check put these sites for more info.. Also go to the bypass forum on this site..

Is anybody having leakage problems with these filters on a Honda, or does the Honda filter mount have "generous" dimensions??

Honda gasket sizes are listed as:
2.475" OD X 2.173" ID
while the filters you list have gasket sizes of:
2.734" OD X 2.430" ID.

i have not had a leakage problem on the civic and crv. i do not know if it will work with applications i have not tested it with. the d16y7 civic engine, and the b20 crv engine work fine.

i also updated the site with a disected stp oil filter if anyones interested. it appears to have wix parts. the adbv is identical to wix, and the bypass is similar.

Not exactly. STP branded filters are made by Champion Laboratories (no relation to Champion spark plugs)...as are Mobil 1 branded filters, K&N branded oil filters, (U.S.) Bosch branded oil filters, and many others.

Motorcraft (and ACDelco and Mopar) may contract out production to any filter maker that meets their spec and price.

using a caliper to check physical size, i will say again the stp has a wix anti drain back valve. the wix and stp adbv's are identical in every way shape and form, except that the stp is rubber and the wix is silicone.

the stp's bypass valve is also the same as wix, except the stp's bypass valve is built into the metal end cap, and not removable like the wix is.

That's an interesting find. Who woulda thunk?

But, there are at least three other possibilities.

1. The Wix could have an STP (Champion) ADV.

2. They could both be getting their ADV valves from the same third party supplier.

3. They could both be using tooling from the same tooling supplier.

Interesting. The rust on the Motorcraft seems to suggest that it had been sitting around a long time between when it was made and when you opened it up. I don't think that outside of Ford dealers Motorcraft filters sell very well compared to other brands.

I'm also not surprised that people have reported both Purolator and Wix constructed Motorcraft filters. We know that AC-Delco also has at least two manufacturing operations, the in house Delphi one and Champion labs. I've also seem AC-Delco filters marked Made in England.

This past week I bought a Wix air filter for our Accord, and it is marked Made in South Korea. The construction quality looks to be very good, but I doubt it came from a Wix factory.

The filter companies trade product almost as frequently as the gasoline companies do!

my applications are a kia sephia, a mazda protege and miata, a honda civic and crv, and a rotary motor.
these are all oversize filters that fit these motors.

the motorcraft fl-295 is a good deal when i can find it. however finding it in stock is a problem. occasionally my local parts store has it in stock for $3. wallyworld does not carry this filter however. the ford dealer has motorcraft in stock, however at the stealer price, it is not worth it.

i would like to take apart some more filters, like a bosch and a fram extended guard however i have not had the time to do so.

supertech filters are not made in this size :\

also, the rust you see is from the filters sitting in my workshop for a month after being cut open. we have very salty air and everything rusts out in the open. when i cut these filters open a month ago, there was no rust so please disreguard it.
