Already have a cordless and not a huge fan of keyless chuck drills especially when drilling through anything metal. Im just looking for something for around the house jobs and occasionally drilling through metal and drilling out broken bolts. I'm looking at this makita any suggestions or comments?

Makita 6407 3/8-Inch Variable Speed Reversible Drill

Never owned a makita before but I hear they make one of the best and the price is right.

Wow, they still make that thing? That's one of the first tools I ever bought! Mine is >20 years old and it's seen a ton of use--much of it completely inappropriate for its size before I knew better (things like mixing drywall mud). It still works! So, I have to say it's worked pretty well for me.

That said, I have no idea if the new one are the same, so it would be good to check from someone who's bought one in the last decade.

AFAIK Both the Makita and the Milwaukee are now made in China but there are some NOS Milwaukee around, check HD and ebay.

+1, have no issues with Makita (I have the MAC 2400 compressor) but I have owned a corded 1/2 Milwaukee drill for over 15 years (looks like the same model). It's the best hand drill I have ever owned, well made, plenty of power, and nicely balanced (with or without the additional handle)

+1 I have one and it is a work horse.

I have Makita, Milwaukee and Bosch corded tools.

My favorite is a Makita reciprocating saw that my dad had for 15 years on the job and I have had for about 7. That thing has seen a ton of abuse and keeps going. Can't go wrong with Makita.

I have a corded Dewalt similar to the link below and i have really liked it. It is fairly small and quiet. The chuck seems to grip well. I have had it for about 5 yrs or so and really like it. I got it for about 45 dollars.

My best drill is a milwaukee 1/2 inch drill similar to the one below. It is very smooth and unbelievably powerful.

I would bet you could not go wrong with any of the brand name corded drills. I read alot of great things about the Ridgid drills but when i bought the large 1/2 inch version it was much louder and have more vibration than than the Milwaukee above that i replaced it with.

Kind of depends on your drill bit sizes. Occasionally I have to drill 1/8" cobalt bit into hardened screws. I have an old Makita that spins very fast I keep on a shelf and get for this, because it turns very fast.
I also have that Milwaukee 0234-6 Magnum, which is for an entirely different application (large holes; mixing concrete). I don't reach for it often. In fact, both these drills aren't ones I reach for normally. They're ones I reach for when a regular cordless drill isn't appropriate.

+2. I have a US made example, and have put it through a lot.

I have that Makita, or more correctly, the similar model from 1983. After 30 years, it's been worked hard, handled thousands of jobs, from automotive, to household, to woodworking, and to this day, works flawlessly.

That Makita is a fine choice.

My dad still has a Craftsman drill from the 70's that has drilled through everything and anything and is still going strong. I don't know if they still make a keyed chuck model....my Craftsman Professional corded drill is great but it's a hand chuck.

dewalt makes keyed chuck drills 3/8" and 1/2". I think it's a dw223 and a dw235 iirc. They don't sell these models at home depot

I've been a fan of Milwaukee tools for quite a while. However, the one in the link provided costs twice what that Makita costs. It may be worth it, but it also may be overkill for the OP's needs. For my own needs I generally use my cordless Milwaukee for most things, and for what it won't handle, I use my Hole Hawg Hole Hawg . The Hole Hawg is made for drilling large holes all day, every day, and is too big and heavy for casual use.

An 18+ volt lithium-ion drill from Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, DeWalt, etc., will do just about anything that you don't need a Hole Hawg for. However, they also cost much more than the aforementioned Makita corded drill.

For general corded-drill uses, that Makita looks pretty good for the price.

I have several Makita corded power tools. All have been flawless, and I would not hesitate to purchase that drill, particularly at that price point.

The issue I've had with the Milwaukee in the link is when you bind it up, the long trigger does not allow you to release the trigger without letting go of the handle. We referred to them as wrist snappers. On the upside they are strong and durable. I'm partial to Milwaukee.

I've also used the Makita, it's a good tool as is everything Makita makes.

Yes but the Milwaukee can be found all over the net for $139 while a 1/2' Makita cost $129. IMHO the Milwaukee is well worth a $10 premium.
Why go with a 3/8 wimp if your going to be married to a cord? A decent 18V cordless has more power, when i reach for drill with a cord i have a good reason, i need something with some serious power.

Mine is US made as well. Like Trav said, if you need a 1/2" drill the Milwaukee with the cord is the go to drill. Most light duty jobs the cordless drills I have are fine. If I need to whip a 5 of joint compound to spackle, or wallpaper paste to feed through the pasting machine the Milwaukee wins hands down.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I am a huge milwaukee fan as are most you but the corded milwaukee mentioned above is just overkill for what I need. I ended up buying the makita and am pretty happy thus far can tell it's a quality tool
