I was thinking about buying the weakest oil such as City Star and buying one of those super duper fortified additives and mixing it to proper ratios. Then perform a VOA to see what kind of oil I would get. Obviously nothing is as good as a good oil to begin with. I would not do this to use in my vehicles (or 30 yr old OPE for that matter). I would not use oils that PQIA has shown to have high iron or any other metals such as this. I kind of have a mechanics bet riding on this. A co worker of mine says you can use a cheap oil and fortify it with an additive and make it as good as a quality oil. I disagree.
Any suggestions as far as oils and additives?

How about Lucas for a cheap oil?

Seriously though, how are you planning to measure the "quality" of the product? A VOA alone might pick out an exceptionally bad oil, but it isn't going to tell you much about how "good" an oil is when you get to anything halfway decent or better.

Tell your coworker to always buy the best oil Family Dollar sells and the best snake oil additive and he will be happy with the results. It can be tried out on my ex wife's Mercedes.

This is what I was kind of thinking. I'm losing interest on this bet.

For sure. In addition to wrong viscosities, they have other issues such as contaminants.

And you would be correct.
