Consumption on D1 5w40 vs M1 5w50

I currently have M1 5w50 in the sump and the engine is consuming it at an alarming rate. about 1 quart in 1500 miles. Previously on Selenia Racing 10w60 I used 1 qt in 3000 miles. I was planning to use D1 5w40 for my next fill and I'm wondering if this is likely to be better or worse? At the 1 year point I was thinking about draining the M1 and using it in my old Ford as it will have a lot of life left in it, then filling the Fiat with D1.

The Delvac 1 is worth a shot. That's the oil that gave me the lowest rate of consumption in the old Audi, slightly better than Delvac 1300 15w-40 and RP 0w-40. I didn't try any 50 grades, though.
