Windshield / Dashboard Shade Recommendations?

I have the Autocraft one from Advance, the one with blue foil material on one side. It works great and keeps my interior much cooler than the cheaper one I had before that was silver on both sides. Price was right too, less than $10.00. It also folds up a lot easier than any other shade I have used.

I cut this Reflectix 25'x24" Reflective Insulation to fit the cars, a 25' roll can make 5-6 windshield shades at a cost of about $5/ea. I also cut it to insulate the battery too.

I got tired of looking for a sun shade that would fit the non-standard shaped windshield on my new Kia Rio. What is available in walmart and pepboys is not satisfactory and would leave out gaping holes. This car is going to be used in a high heat geography. Not willing to shell out $50 for Covercraft, which would be the best fit. Now, i am considering this suggestion, after having taken a look at this material in Lowes today. The spec says it is about 7mm thickness. The only problem would be its tendency to roll-up after few uses and keeping it rolled up while in storage. So, i am contemplating a little DIY project of affixing this to a accordian style foldable material from Michael's to create a custom made windshield similiar to CoverCraft brand. I can use this idea for all my other cars too, since they all need replacement shades for summer.

What do you guys think ? Too much work and not worth it ? The alternative is to buy the Walmart stuff, and live with the gaping rectangle of about 3"x20" and take the hit on the dash and added heat inside car.

Have you thought about just buying a Walmart accordion style shade that is made for a much larger vehicle and then trimming it down to fit your Rio exactly?

I've bought twice from these folks: https://www.heatshieldstore.com/ Like you, I found the
Walmart sunshades to be either too big or too small for the Buick Park Avenue. The Heatshield one comes rolled up, not folded, and fastens with a Velcro strap. When the time came to buy a windshield shade for the Regal, a smaller car, I immediately went to them.

They also have rear window sunshades for some cars, but I've found a standard Walmart one, folded right, works quite well in the back compartment of the Regal.

We sell custom fit ones called Auto Shade from a company called Intro-Tech. They are affordable and fairly high quality.

Here are some fuzzy pics of our collection

LOL I know exactly what you speak of. Its like dandruff! Or dried, flaky sunburned skin.

I've resigned myself to buying a new shade every year. They don't last.

I fold it accordian style 7-8" wide without problem and it stays like that since.

It had been 2 years and still in good shape.

I have the WeatherTech sun shade and could not be happier the shade fits perfect not even the smallest gap,
But the price, like all of there products, It is not cheap.
The quality is top notch the shade is made in Germany for them.

I prefer the Eclipse sun shade to all others. Mounts by the A-pillars, retracts, and fits very well.

I use a Dashmat Dashtex cover on my car dashboard. I chose it because Mitsubishi interiors are prone to developing crack from UV.

Thanks HTSS. I am going to fold it up accordion style and it will be easy to store. I wound up custom fitting the Sunsheild, out of the Reflectix i bought in Home depot. The whole project (including going to Home depot) took a few hours of an afternoon and was simple to do. Got a perfect fit to the car, because Walmart accordian style was not fitting properly to this car. I used a plastic film to trace the edge where dash meets window, as you can see in these pictures i took. Saved me about $50 on a custom fit.

Interesting topic.. I have multiple sclerosis... Heat especially extreme heat can cause me to have a bad spell. I got into my car the other week and it was 155° in my car. How do I know this?? I have a thermometer in my cars ac vent. Even that short exposure to extreme heat was causing me issues. So I went and got a silver fold up front windshield cover from autozone. It has helped a good bit .. The temp Friday was around 125°. Though I wonder if u got a better one if it could drop it even further?? To like 105° to 110° ? Ambient temp Friday was 94°. Is this possible ?? With a better designed window shade.
