I have to use Plug & Feather Lubricant - 1/2 pint can $25.00/ ea. when I use my Darda rock splitter. I apply it every 2 uses. So I use a can every 2 days. I did some snooping and figured out what this mystery lubricant was. And I found out it is Castrol optimol paste white t. I special ordered a 5 gal pail for a couple hundred bucks so I am set for a little while. Just wondering if there is an alternate lubricant that can also work the same.

Are you using the lube on the plug that slides down into the feather?

Grease

in NLGI 3.

Yes on the plug that slides down the feathers. It has 413 tons of force and the feathers cost about 1,000.00 each to replace when they brake. I have replaced about 5 of them over the years. by the way the feathers have a carbide coating on them if it makes any difference.

This stuff is interesting.

Probably lots of EP/antiwear protection.
Probably a pretty decent drop point
Excellent tackibility...

My guess is it's a standard EP grease they threw more tackifier into in order to help it stay in place under the heavy vibrations and heat.
