I bought a new compressor and they want either 40wt compresser oil or SAE40 ND oil.

Do I really need that thick of an oil? Probly pulls lots of amps especially when it's cooler outside.

I would follow the manufacturer directions. Good way to keep warranty in place.

Short version: If that's what the design engineers want in that compressor, I assume it's for a good reason.

I use schaeffers 15-40 in mine, works well.

In this case, the Manf. specs an ND a Non-Detergent oil.

Schaeffers Motor oil doesn't qualify.

An ISO120 or ISO150 (120 cSt or 150cSt) compressor oil will work well for you too. There are plenty of manufactures that produce lubricants with compressor specific additive packages that would be of use for you. Most good compressor lubes are rated in this viscosity instead of SAE weights, so it may make your hunt easier.

My guess is it's a new reciprocating style compressor that has a pretty high maximum pressure or they are expecting wear or dilution...
