I recently bought a 2000 Subaru Outback 2.5 with 245,000 miles. I am wondering if anyone else has a high mileage Subaru 2.5 and what oil they are using. The motor is clean without any external leaks (no internal that I am aware of) and has had the better head gaskets replaced by previous owner. I do alot of highway and stop and go driving. Thanks

Mobil 1 High Mileage is what I'd probaly use, or MaxLife. I'm usng M1 HM in a 03 Forester now with 132k miles.

Summer:
10w30 HM pennzoil or a mixture of 1/2 10w40 and 10w30. Our NEW Forester with the EJ motor wanted a pretty high HTHS to behave.
You're on your own for winter

But most likely a HM5w30 bronze bottle pennzoil or just green bottle QS 5w30.

I Stay away from HDEO like Chevron 15w40. Rotella T 10w30 is fine with maybe a bottle of 5w30 Formula Shell.

I used 5w-30 Pennzoil High Mileage in my 2002 Outback with 5,000 mile OCI until I sold it with 183K on it to purchase my 2012 Legacy.

Co worker Subaru 2.5 has over 200k and he uses Pennzoil.
He had his head gasket replaced few years ago and remember he took in Pennzoil to have the shop put in so he could keep the Pennzoil in it. I saw it at work today... so its still ticking (running).

My 20 yr old son has a 98 Forester, first year they made it. It's got the DOHC 2.5 with 150,000 miles. Earlier this year did the head gaskets and all cam seals and front main seal.

Just put in German Castrol 0w30 with a PureONE filter and he said it's smoother running than it's ever been.

If it has no consumption or leaks, any quality 5w30 will keep it happy. For mostly interstate conditions, there should be no problem with the factory 7500 mile interval.

I have the same engine, with about half your miles. Between the previous owner it has seen conventional, syn blend, and synthetic oil, never had an oil related issue.

I happen to prefer oils with a decent dose of moly, as my piston slap quiets down quick that way, so my preferred oils are Pennzoil conventional, Quaker State conventional, and Quaker State Defy.
