Here is my workbench / storage rack.
It's not hard, but sketching up a plan helps tremendously with figuring out the amount of material, making the cuts and ensuring little leftovers.

I didn't say they were cheap. On the other hand, for $50 in brackets and screws, $16 in 2x4's, and $20 in plywood you are building a very stout bench for less than $100. I consider that a good deal.
