Hello
I own an Opel Frontera 1996 2.0i petrol engine sport.I do offroad with it (steep hills, mud etc)..Now my engine oil is a Castrol Magnatec 10w40 A3/B4..The problem is in winter (-20C) the engine is turning very lazy..To solve this problem i am thinking of switching to a 5w40 part synthetic. If i put full synthetic i may get leakeages.
The only brand i can find that have 5w40 part synthetic is Lukoil... 20euro/4 litres
Also i may need to put in gearbox and transfer box too the same oil..Also if you have suggestion for some kind of Off-road engine oil i am interested...

The two oils that i have in mind:

and

The avantgarde is meant for Trucks but there is also the standard A3/B4-04 listed...

Thank you

If you go with a high mileage full syn (Valvoline MaxLife, M1 HM, etc.) the seal conditioners may help prevent any leaks that would otherwise develop from cleaned up deposits that are currently blocking small holes/tears in the gaskets.

Sorry but no technical info (PDS) is provided on the company websites.

Does your Opel have an oil pressure or oil temperature gauge?
I wouldn't worry about oil leaks either and would run an A3/B4 0W-30 if you can get one or a 5W-30 if not in the winter.

Hi and thx for answers...Regarding the sheets here it is for the Avantgarde Ultra oil

And here is for the other:

Regarding the temp gauge you mean the one on the console..If that it is i have it.I never knew how to read this one...

I would consider more 0w-40 but is very expensive for my pockets..In the car book is not specificified 0w-XX oils as supported..Also i don't think the 0w was on the market when the manual was made and the car released..Also in the book it states API SG/CD and the most expensive types are 5w-XX series as supported.

I live in Sweden and I use in my 1994 volvo 945 some STOU tractor oil 10w30 with success at low temps for 3€/l

Mineral oil with high level of ZDDP. Pourpoint -37°C

Thx mini ... That's very tractor like oil ... It's curious that is playing nice with Volvo or the "old" cars have some tractor heritage that we don't know ?

What it is curious is people who pay very expensive oils for engines who just need a GOOD mineral oil with normal OCI...

Like dnewton3 showed in his UOA statistical studies, mineral oil have the better ROI on normal OCI.

As long as you have no exhaust particules filter and your engine does'nt eat oil, those kind of high ash oils are the best.

Tractor oils are GL-4 also, so they have a high level of ZDDP, and protect well

Look below at the results of the UOA with tractor oil compared to the average of the same engines at the same mileage (low ash oils). My car has a hard life with only 7km trips, no engine warmer and -25° in winter... The only problem is fuel dilution, normal with those kind of short cold trips. I am sure I could go to 15 000 km if I was doing only long trips...

PS: I didn't remenber it was so cold in Costanta when I was bathing in the Black sea

And as the Frontera use the same oil in gearbox and tranfer box as in the engine, a GL-4 tractor oil will be better also into the boxes...

The Lukoil Avantgarde is pretty fine at price 3.5 euros / litre ...If you can look on the datasheets can you tell me if it's fine?.The TBN is looking fine. Also the avantgarde and luxe are the only 5w-40 semi syntethics that i could find...

Come in january and february in Constanta so you can bath at -15 C or -20 C depends on preferences ... :))

I thing the lukoil is this one ?

The VOA look nice for the price and should be ok in the engine, despite the add pack is not particulary strong for a CI-4 (little Moly, no Bromon).

But as you have to put it in gear and tranfer box too, you should do some UOA to see how the base perform in a gearbox. If the base is not strong enough, the viscosity will go down quickly. I have no experience in russian base oil, so no idea of how they resist...

Tractor oil is GL-4 so it is normaly made to resist in gearboxes too

Yes but if you buy the same oil for all by 20 liters can, it is less expensive
