I was given a 1975 cheverolet pickup on Saturday ..has 175,000 miles on it ( or 275,000) don't know how many times the odometer has rolled

I took off the valve covers today and founs a small amount of sludge in there ..so changed the oil and added ARX I took a few picture and hosted them @ imgspot hopes this works .

As you can see it it hard to see the sludge on a cast iron head ...too dark ..didn't look too bad to me, until I ran my finger across a few inches of surface...pulled up a lot of grit...

yeah I admit ..it is a heck of a lot cleaner then I thought it would be...the oil cap was sludged..and when I looked through the fill hole I thought it looked fouled up ...but was really suprised to see how clean it looked with the cover off.

As for how it runs...well even in the 20 degree weather that we have had..It started right up! the owner said that the battery looses charge ( it has a new alternator on it, but I think it looses charge for 2 reasons...it will sit for month without being started ..and ...the brake light comes on sometimes when driving ...it has a loose fan belt .
Plans for the truck, well I intend to use it for projects around the house that I have been avoiding ..new door upstairs , hual away junk ect.ect..
My wife and I are also planning on buying a second house ( rent it out and with two houses i figure i have to have a truck for maininace issues .

Yes, it does not look that bad. When I rebuilt a V8 in high school 25 years ago I had to scrape the sludge off of the heads with a putty knife.
