Hi guys,

- above 80 kmph at the point of loading (acceleration) and unloading (deceleration w/o using break) there is a slight singing / whining from the rear
- the same singing is present in idler neutral gear between 80 and 100 kmph (just as additional info)

I dont know if it comes from diff or it is tramsmmitted from gearbox via power train - rear axle to car body.

What is possibly the best / most successfull diff lube to try to get rid of the slight noise ?
Who has experience ?

In car manual is recommended:

temp < -30 °C SAE 80
-30 < temp < 30°C SAE 90
temp > 30 °C SAE 140 °C

temps here are between -20°C in winter and 35°C in summer.

thanks for answer

What vehicle and transmission?

There could be quite a few causes:

It could be your tires, or pinion/ring gear contact loading, axle bearings, etc.

Manual transmission 5 speed
Hyundai Grand Starex / H1 / H300
2.5 Liter Turbocharged Diesel Van
mileage: 55.000 km
tried already different synthetic diff lubes with varying results

be aware of the speed range 80 - 100 kmph, typical for all causes ?

My grand marquis also does this and I thought it was the bearing. Starts about 60 mph and gets worse as I go faster.

+1. This more than likely is a mechanical problem, not a lube problem.

Is 214 167 or 209 available in less than 5gal pail

available in quarts: http://stores.buyschaefferoil.com/-strse-Gear-Oil--Synthetic-%26-Plus/Categories.bok

#167 75W-140
#209
#209A SAE80
#239S
#239 80W-90
#293 75W-90
#740 EP 80W-140 E/A
#741 Ep 75W-90 E/A

1.) What would be generally the best quieting Schaeffers diff lube independently of container size ?
2.) What would be the most appropriate of the available quarter-bottled lubes ?

Put a used diff in my El Camino and it had a whine only under load. Quiet when coasting. FSM says the ring and pinion are out of adjustment. Been doing it for 17 years. I'll get around to putting in my eBay gearset one of these days. Until then I'm not worried.

Nice catch busfreak. Schaeffers itself only packages the 293 75/90 in quarts. It looks like these folks are indeed repackaging
other gear oils on their own.
Best for your question....the correct iso grade and/or one grade up. For rear end the 293 or 167 series.
