So I have the vehicle listed above and trying to figure out which oil I need. 2 stickers on the engine block say 228.51 and 229.31. Mobil1 0w40 says it meets MB 229.5, which I use in my BMW M62TU. Then on the Mobil1 website, it says the 08 ML320 CDI requires a 229.51 and to see your dealer. I am wondering if I have to use the Mobil 1 ESP, or if I can use the M1 0W40 Euro Formula. Also wondering if an oil meets 229.5, does it meet or exceed every spec with a number lower than that?

By the way, I am not sure if the US model 2008 ML320 CDI has a DPF or not.

In the UK Mobil spec one of their 229.51 Mobil1 blends but the UK and US have different marketing names.

Castrol spec either a Magnatec 5W/40 C3 which is a 229.31 spec or the more expensive Edge 5W/30 which covers both x.31 and x.51

well I pretty much came to the conclusion that its the Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W40 that I needed. Meets MB 229.51. Just bought 9 quarts from the dealer, it was $4 a quart cheaper than Pep Boys.

Given ULSD, Id be confident running a low SAPS .31 or 51 spec oil, however, Id be watching TBN. DOes the engine have a DPF or catalytic oxidizer or similar emissions components?

LOL, so does my '82 300CD!

I think every diesel car and truck engine went DPF for MY2008. They made all gas stations sell ULSD in 2007 in order to get ready for those DPF equipped cars.

As for older diesel cars with EGR, that is common in the USA. That is because of how little NOx cars have been allowed to emit. Sometimes the version of the car sold in California would have different smog devices than cars for the other states. Some 1970s diesel car engines even had EGR in the USA, including the notoriously bad Oldsmobile 350 diesel.
