Since DI diesels need clean fuel, and the new Ford Ecoboost DI engine may also need refined fuel, would it be feasible to use a diesel fuel filter in a gas engine to replace the OEM fuel filter? Would the media melt, dissolve?

Not sure how you would make that work. Diesel filters are typically a spin on type, not even close to the same thing a gasoline engine uses. IIRC, the fuel filter on your Ecoboost is in the fuel tank.
The only diesel I have owned with a spin on filter is my Taxi.
Most have cartridge or are metal with pipes coming out the top.
To the OP the way the fuel enters the engine doesn't mean the filters will be compatible.
The Ecoboost engines in Europe seem to be very efficient so can't see how you would improve things.
Unless the Ecoboost engines have different goals in the US.
But here they are all part of the downsizing for lower emissions and better fuel economy idea.
We are even getting the new Mustang in the UK!
