2004 Audi Allroad 2.7L just confirmed with a bad transmission at 135k. Slipage on lower gears 1-2 and 2-3. Need a good place to find a replacement tranny. I've been able to find only used transmissions. I called jasper transmissions and they do not build a remanufactured. I also called Rydell Powertrain and they also do not have a remanufactured tranny but they did find a used one with 120k miles. They want 1,750 with no core and will warranty it for 12 months or 12k miles with parts and labor. Anyone here know where to get one or if I should go used or remanufactured. Not considering a rebuild.

Try to find a local tranny shop that specializes in German cars. that what i did when the tranny in a 330I went out. All the dealers and most Bmw specialist just wanted to slap in a rebuilt. the tranny place pulled the tranny, fixed what ever was wrong with it and reinstalled for half the price of a rebuilt

Your 2004 must have just missed the cutoff for when they updated the torque converter seal that causes all of the problems. If you can find a used unit from a late 04 or any 05 allroad, you will have one with the updated parts. I'm assuming that you are talking the 5-speed auto and not the 6-speed manual.

If you want a good remanufactured unit, ZF in Vernon Hills, IL is who you should contact. They rebuild them right at the facility and ship to your installer, or they can give you the name of a certified rebuilder closest to you (even though you said you didn't want to go that route).

Head on over to Quattroworld.com in the allroad section for all the info you could ever want.

Edit: Have you at least tried a fluid and filter change? I realize that it's probably too late, but for ~$50 in parts and fluid it may be worth a shot.

So I gotta ask here...why not? The price? The poor transmission shops in your area? Going to sell it soon?
Why do you not want a genuine rebuild?

Bad experience and later found out that remanufactured transmissions replace all inner parts with new and usually updated parts vs most rebuilds concentrate on the affected areas...No reputable tranny shops out here that I know of but feel free to recommend.

Could the slippage problem be vacuum related. I wish I knew more about transmission so that I could properly diagnose issues. It seems like most shops just suck you in and advise you to get a new transmission. Are these transmission serviceable meaning do they have a dip stick or tranny pan that drops so that the filter can be replaced?

The car began having trouble shifting gears after a 25 minute drive. The gears would hesitate when shifting and would be at a higher-than-usual RPM, and then all the gears lit up in red on the dash (P,R,N,D,S) and the check engine light when on. I tried to turn the car off and restart it, but the check engine light would keep showing and the the gears would again rev too high durring shifts and would eventually all light up again and fall into safemode after a few minutes. As of now the car can drive and go into reverse and even tiptronic mode, and drive forward and go up 25-30 mph but the first gear gets stuck on a high RPM (4,000-6,000) when shifting and always falls into safemode eventually. 2 days prior to the problem, we had the oil changed as well as the valve gaskets & camshaft breather hose replaced. the car ran perfectly for 2 days and then this problem suddenly occurred. after taking it to the audi dealer, their diagnostic said there were incorrect gear ratios as well as other fault codes. it is hard to know what we need to replace at this point and weather its a electrical or mechanical issue.

the symptoms you describe could be a brain or sensor problem also.

Did the place you brought to have it read definitively say it was the tranny?? i would find someone with a code reader and check them myself

Sounds like a solenoid to me,if this tranny is so equipped.

I cannot access the picture of the codes you posted, so can you list them? Did the dealer confirm that the fluid level was correct?

When you say you had the oil changed, do you mean the engine oil or transmission fluid? Did you do the oil change? There have been instances where a person with a new Audi went to change their oil on the 2.7 and pulled the drain plug on the trans instead of removing the belly pan and finding the crankcase drain plug. The factory trans fluid is the same color as motor oil, so the mistake may not have been noticed.

If the trans fluid has never been changed, it may be that the filter pickup has finally been clogged enough that now you are getting low fluid pressure and that would cause the symptons that you are describing.

Motor oil. We did not change the motor oil ourselves. Not sure why you cannot open the pictures. Try a desktop or laptop computer.

I'm at work and our filter doesn't allow it.

I'd again suggest to have the trans fluid and filter changed and see if it does anything. There's no dipstick, do filling needs to be done from underneath the trans and at a specific temp range.

I use the filter kit from Autozone because it comes with a rubber gasket and it's cheap. MaxLife Dex/Merc fluid meets the spec and is also cheap at Autozone. It takes about 5-6 quarts to refill after dropping the pan.

audipages.com has a nice writeup for the procedure. It's on an A8, but it is essentially the same.

with so many incorrect gear ratio fault codes it is going to be tough to fix without an overhaul IMO
