My next oil change is coming up soon and I had thought of using Castrol HM 5W-30 due to its high 100C kinamatic viscosity (11.9) and perhaps 3.3 cp HT/HS. The car is the VW 2.slow in my signature with now 110k miles. I've had success reducing my oil consumption from 1qt/1k miles to 1/3 qt. with ST 10W-40 by Warren, which I filled 4k miles ago.

Now, I am looking at three A3/B4 synthetic oils for my next OC in a week:

1. Mobil 1 HM 10W-30. HT/HS 3.5, KV@100C 12.
2. Mag1 5W-40 Euro, 3.7cP, 12.95cSt.
3. Mag1 5W-30 C3, 3.56cP, 12.2cSt.

All three have high TBN's around 10, and
I'm leaning towards Mag1 5W-40. Any suggestions or inputs?

I would use whichever one is cheaper, to be honest. The 2.slow isn't tough on oil, despite many of them burning oil due to the #1 piston rings installed upside down from the factory.

Run whichever you can get cheapest, keep the oil level topped up and enjoy where you live!

I think Warren made a mistake on their website about the 5W-30 Euro being 502.00/505.00. It is most likely 504.00/507.00 because of the low SAPS needed to meet LL-04. If you are only doing 5k mile OCIs, then it should still be suitable. But if you're doing 10k, the TBN won't hold up.

Nice to see they are offering it in quarts and 4l jugs. Last time I considered this oil it was still only available in 55 galllon drums.

Finally! something other than a "and sleep well" comment! Kudos to you my friend.

One of the two Jettas in the household is a 2.Slow. 2001 and it burned thru about 2-3 quarts every 5000 mile OCI. Just started the 3rd consecutive OCI on a 50/50 mix of Nextgen 5w-30 and Nextgen 10w-40. Figured that mix should wind up with an HTHS of 3.3-3.4 so close enough to the 3.5 recommended by VW later in life (IIRC the manual issued w/ the car said API 5w-30 SL was sufficient which probably assumed an HTHS in hte 3.0 range). I do not see this engine really needing anything stout like the 1.8t needs.

I hope you enjoyed it and it helps you sleep well tonight.

Thanks everyone. Good catch on the Mag1 5W-30 C-3 perhaps not meeting 502.00 spec due to low saps. I think I will go for the Mag1 5W-40 Euro. It meets 502 and cheaper per qt at Amazon ($32 for 6 qts).

I tried thinning out my Supertech dino 10W-40 with 10W-30 but my engine sounds thrashy at higher rpms, yet smooth at lower. This is compared to the smooth operation from a prior OC with PYB 10W-40. However, it burned more with PYB.

I wish I could use dino but it's not practical since I drive 4k miles in two months. I change my own oil, so I'm looking for longer OCI with synthetic.

Thanks, that would have been a thinner 502.00 spec option. The TBN is lower than the Euro 5W-40 requirement for ACEA A3/B4. Maybe I will try it next OCI as I placed order for 5W-40 at Amazon already. They're roughly same price.
