Glad to see Gov. Cuomo is leading the nation

NEW YORK (WABC) -- It appears someone forgot to exempt police officers from the ban of ammunition clips with more than 7 bullets in New York State's new gun control law.

It's a big oversight that apparently happened in the haste by the Cuomo Administration to get a tough package of gun-control measures signed into law.

On Tuesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the sweeping gun measure, the nation's toughest. It includes a ban on the possession of high-capacity magazines.

Specifically, magazines with more than 7 rounds will be illegal under the new law.

The problem as the statute is currently written does NOT exempt law enforcement officers.

The NYPD, the State Police and virtually every law enforcement agency in the state carry 9-milli-meter guns, which have a 15-round capacity.

Unless an exemption is added by the time the law takes effect in March, police would technically be in violation of the new gun measure.

Within the last hour, the Patrolman's Benevolent Association President released a statement saying, "The PBA is actively working to enact changes to this law that will provide the appropriate exemptions from the law for active and retired law enforcement officers."

State Senator Eric Adams, a former NYPD Captain, told us he's going to push for an amendment next week to exempt police officers from the high-capacity magazine ban. In his words, "You can't give more ammo to the criminals"

A spokesman for the Governor's office called us to say, "We are still working out some details of the law and the exemption will be included."

If there is any indication as to the raw stupidity of the people that both wrote and voted on this legislation....

Who is going to arrest all of the police for being in violation of the law?

This is the kind of stupidity that the State of Illinois cranks out on a regular basis.

Just goes to prove that no one with a brain wrote it, and no one with a brain read it.

Some people are rushing to show everybody (and especially certain people and groups) that they are the leading edge when it comes to protecting our children, being advanced in every possible new thinking way, etc. So they are making mistakes like no exemption for police for the more than 7 rounds magazine ban. These people are the worst leaders and not the best.

Sorry Gov. Cuomo-one of the best way to protect the school children would be to have police officers in schools. I bet, if somebody checked, they would find that Gov. Cuomo's children have protection of some kind in the schools that they attend. But of course, children from poor families and middle class families have to attend the public schools.

What about programs to have better mental health, which might go a long ways to reduce these sorts of crimes?

There is technology available to defend schools better even without armed guards.

Rushing into things usually is no good. There needs to be a considerable amount of thought put into all of this. But some people are always more interested in the display and appearing to certain groups.

The founding fathers knew what they were doing. I wish more people would go back and read the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of The United States of America, and the Bill of Rights.

Here are some more great Thomas Jefferson quotes...

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms, disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man"

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"

"Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have .... The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases"

Jefferson was right, sadly (and he was actually bummed about this), we was the minister/ambassador to France when the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written. I find that Madison is the guy to go to for constitutional questions.

If you are inferring that this is where criminals are getting their guns then you are either highly misinformed or have some kind of agenda.

The polarization is just pitiful to see. This is how liberty will leave us, a very small bite at a time. People should rightly fear any move to restrict the most basic document we have that DEFINES our country.

So many of the younger crowd these days think patriotism isn't "cool" and are not well informed on the issues. They get their news from sound bites and comedians and imagine that their government somehow cares for them personally.

I fear for my children's future, it is shaping up quite badly in my eyes. The gun issue is only one part of it.

Why should law enforcement have access to high capacity magazines and citizens not? For "killing lots of people", as was worded earlier in this thread? Maybe law enforcement should be restricted to the same weapons civilians have access.

LOL... Yeah I was just thinking about this yesterday. Let's see if Obama will sign an executive order prohibiting the Secret Service from using these 'assault weapons' or magazines which hold more than 10 rounds.

My friend Jack Lewis, a disabled vet said it best:

Liberty is scary, folks. It's a tightrope. Try not to jump up and down all the time, or we'll ALL fall off.
