Dumb things people say about cars.

My college roommate thought that car batteries are filled with just water as that is what we add to them (as he held his battery almost upside down before charging it in our apartment).

As a boy we were jumping the neighbors car to start it and the wife said pointing the the six battery caps (back then), "Are those the spark plugs?"

My sister once told me proundly that she had changed her car oil herself. I almost fell over. Then I realized that she ment she was so pround that she had checked the oil level for the first time in her life.

Got any funny ones?

A guy once told me, "I rebuilt this engine myself, and the oil pressure is so high, it blows the dipstick out!"

I heard a girl talking to her father about buying a Toyota Corolla FX-16. Her dad had asked her what was so great about it. "I don't know," she said. "The salesman just said it has fourteen valves."

I had an uncle that swore up and down that changing ones oil was a scam. He reasoned that oil sat in the ground for millions of years and didn’t go bad so it must not go bad in an engine. He would argue about it for hours if you let him.

That isn't so uncommon. I have seen the same thing said here on BITOG with respect to valve cover gaskets.

I've also seen someone claim that sludge accumulation or movement in an engine caused the oil level to change(to the tune of half a quart).

"my car stops better (in snow) because it has AWD"

"I don't need to replace the headlight bulb, I'll just use my high beams"

"I poured anti-freeze in, why does my windshield still have stuff on it"
lol.gif

"I always put 93 in (referring to octane) because it makes my car go much faster" (car is a 1995 Ford Escort)

"I thought windshield wipers never wore out"

"my car just stopped shortly after the little red teapot light came on"

"Hey guys watch this!" *Jumps in 88 Fiero* *Attempts a donut* *crashes into light pole* *speeds off into the night*

"My car runs so much (smoother|better|peppier|energetic) on [oil brand X] than it does on [oil brand Y of the same type and viscosity]."

"I replaced the timing belt by painting marks on the pulleys and counting teeth."
or my other favorite timing belt saying
"Don't bother replacing the tensioner, rollers, water pump, TTY bolts or idlers, just replace the belt if it looks bad. If it looks OK, don't worry about it."

"The oil looks dark, so it's time to change it."

I probably have tons but I can think of a few.

Once a guy was telling me about his buddy's twin turbo S4, and he said it was so fast, and the second turbo hadn't even kicked in yet when they were driving it.
Obviously not knowing a thing about how they work. I chuckled.

I've seen people say when they put new transmission fluid in that they want to believe is the nectar of the gods, the transmission even revs lower on the highway, its so smooth!
LOL!

I helped my friend change the front wheel bearings on her Sunfire a few years ago, and she asked if the rear had bearings too.

I remember once a totally car illiterate guy I worked with bought a Grand Am, would have been late 90's model or maybe 2000, he said it had a V6. I got a ride in it once and as soon as it started and ran it was very obvious it was definitely a 4 cylinder. I did not bother to say anything.

Fun times!

I once knew a guy who just bought a new Eclipse.

"Congrats, very nice car. But no interest in the AWD model?"

"It is AWD. The dealer told me."

I motioned him to look under the car and see for himself the lack of a diff and drive axles.

Did this guy actually have any cars that ran?

I hear people talk about their V4s all the time. Most BMW mommies drive V6s as well. Never correct them.
