COMMENTS:
ZACH: Copper read high in this first sample from your Mazda. It shows some wear at brass/bronze parts. Is
this a problem? It's hard to say. We're inclined to give it another test or two to see what happens before
making any hard and fast calls about this reading. Other metals look good, so as long as you're not having
any trouble with this engine, that's our recommendation for now. Universal averages are based on about
4,000 miles on the oil. The viscosity read slightly low, but no contamination was found that might explain
that or the copper. Check back for another look.

My comments:

I am not having any trouble from this engine. I have done two AutoRX clean and flush cycles. They did improve my compression numbers. I am curious if they have influence on this oil sample. I drove 5000 miles and changed the oil once before this test so it should be mostly "uncontaminated." FYI they are below:

Code:

Compression before and after AutoRX

mileage #1 #2 #3 #4

190380 165 130 160 160 Compression (psi)

190380 160 145 160 160 Compression (psi)

200409 170 165 175 175 Compression (psi)

200409 175 170 175 175 Compression (psi)

I use Bosch 3323 filter on this car. The factory suggestion is a 3300; the 3323 is a slightly larger filter.

I drive approximately 80% highway or interstate driving. I put approximately 400 miles a week on this car.

The high metals could be residual from the autorx flushes. I'd run the same oci and oil to see.

Jack, Id go 3k and test again to see where you are at. If this trend continues go to max life or pennzoil. My wifes buick hated mobil and loves Valvoline Durablend.

Thanks for the feedback folks.

I am already about 1500 miles into my next oil change. I will sample close to a 5000mi change. Man, thanksgiving really let me rack up some miles.

A little back-story: I am the 3rd owner of this car-- the 2nd being my mother and the 1st some stranger. Motor oil was probably changed every 5-8k with Havoline 10w30 if I know my Dad. It got this treatment from about 55,000mi to when I got my hands on it at 175,000. Since then I have used Mobil Super 5000 every 4-5000 miles, like the bottle says... I put a Fumoto drain valve and man that makes it quick and clean.

Thanks

I think everything is OK, except for the Cu as noted.

ARX is a tri-ester formulation; it is possible that the esters reacted with some Cu in your system somewhere. While I cannot assure you of this, it's perhaps as plausible as any other suggestion? One flush may not be enough; it may take a couple to rid the system of the residual effects.

I would agree that another 5k mile OCI/UOA is exactly what should be done. One UOA here is nothing to panic over; it is an indication that continued investigation is warranted at this point, and nothing more.

Love the Fumoto! I have one on my Dmax.

Also, love the info on the ARX and compression. I had exactly the same experience with two treatments of ARX in my old Taurus. That stuff flat works!

This is the only "Mobil Super" analysis I could find in this whole website. I guess everyone else sticks with Mobil 1? If this Mazda was my car, I would at least upgrade to the Mobil Super Synthetic.
