What is in my air compressor oil?

My compressor is a Makita MAC2400 big bore, low speed compressor. I love it. Works great, have used it for nailing, spraying anti-rust oils, blowing out yard sprinkler systems, inflating tires and other things.

Ive had it since maybe 2007, pretty intermittent use... It has had Amsoil compressor oil in it, ISO 100/SAE40 since nearly the beginning, having just broken it in on Makita oil.

Honestly, shamefully, Ive never changed the amsoil lube since I put it in. The compressor stays cool and runs great.

So I wanted to do a change, and change I did. And I was surprised to see the kind of dirt, or metal bits that came out. Some photos:

As you can see in those funnel shots, it is really fine grains of something. I didnt feel if the material or lube was grainy by touching the oil.

Here it is in the disposal container. You can see that the fine bits are separate from the oil, and have their own wisps of this stuff in the oil. I did notice that more of this black stuff comes out at the very end of the draining process.

I repeated the fill and drain twice, once without running the compressor, and then once cycling it a few times. Got more of this stuff out, though finally it as pretty clean.

The first few times, collected, it looked like this:

The last time it came out looking clean like this:

But it took about a quart of flushing oil through to get it clean.

Granted, I let it go too long, but what is this black stuff a sign of? This is a cast iron compressor, so is this just normal? I run it with an air filter and never in excessively humid conditions. I keep the tank drained.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I would say iron from from breaking in. I run Amsoil 40w and 20w in a 50/50 mix or Redline 30w. Quincy specs a 30w, my filter had stuff like that in it the first regular OC.
No problem.

OK thanks! Guess I didnt break it in long enough on the original Makita oil, as it wasnt dirty like that.

So long as it isnt an indication of corrosion or something that I did wrong (besides letting the oil go that long), Im happy.

Thanks again!

I run the same exact oil in mine and its been about that long maybe its time i should do mine, but from the little window sight glass it looks nice and gold yet.

I ran it for an hour all valves open and still go some of that later.
If it doesn't use any significant amount of oil it was almost certainly broken in properly.

Doesnt use any. Didnt run 100% duty cycle to break in, but Ive used it that way a few times since.

Im just glad all is well.

Now, question #2. Mine gets used intermittently. Am I better off storing the unit with some/full pressure in it (it holds pressure tight indefinitely at 130psi), or should I always take it down to 0 psig before putting it away?

Not sure if it makes a difference really, but would appreciate thoughts...

Leave it pumped up,bringing it up to pressure from 0 often is just a wast of electricity and unnecessary wear and tear on the pump.

I have 12 5.5 hp Honda v-twin air compressors. I usecthe same oil you do. Mine also goes black, like yours. These pumps have thousands of hours on them and they aren't any worse for wear.
I wouldn't worry about it.

I use mine daily so its always under pressure, every AM i crack the drain briefly.
In your case i would leave it under pressure but after a day or 2 i would crack the tank drain briefly to get any water out that may be on the bottom of the tank.

I believe the OM gives an interval. The Amsoil lube says that it can go up to 8x interval. I use mine so intermittently, it may go months between uses... So I just arbitrarily decided that now was a good time...

I think the black swirl is just because they don't use dispersants much in compressor oil.

I leave my compressor tank empty, as I always want to blow any moisture out of the tank. Corrosion pits and pressure equipment aren't my scene.

When I used to service compressors onsite we used take the sideplates off and wipe the insides of the crankcase with rags. Our cheap Chinese compressor at work says the same thing in the service manual....but it has no sideplates.

Arent the good ones phenolic coated or something?

I might have to try some of that Amsoil.

I've been running M1 10w-30 in accordance with mfg recommendation.

I change the oil in mine every 2 years or so and it doesn't get the use it once did. It looks like a nice little job to do over the Christmas break.
