FSM calls for 90W or 80W90, GL-5 Hypoid.

Considering going with M1 75W90 Synthetic Gear Oil.

Any reason to go OEM instead, or NOT to go with the M1?

My truck - 2004 Tacoma SR5 4x4. I switched out the factory fill front diff, transfer case and rear diff oil to Pennzoil 75w-90 synthetic at 5000 miles and changed them again at 60,000 and will change them again in another 40,000-50,000 miles. Others in my trail riding group have used Valvoline and Mobil synthetics without complaints. 80w-90 would be a good choice as well if you want to stick to a mineral oil. The straight 90w oil would be a bit harder to find. I have no personal facts to back this up but I'm guessing the 75w-90 would be a better choice in colder climates during the winter yet offer the same protection during the warmer months as you would find in a 80w-90 /90w gear oil.

Good info. Thanks.

Nice truck, BTW. I like the previous-gen body style.

big fan of syn lube in axles. I have amsoil in the tundra. Have used M1 many times, and it is my second favorite to amsoil. I'd do it. You might see a slight ... ~0.5mpg improvement.

Our RAV4 called for the same thing--90W or 80W-90 for the transfer case and rear diff. I changed them both to M1 75W-90 about 6K ago. So far no issue!

That's the old diff oil after 101,000 mi. Nasty.

The new M1 is as clear as new M1 motor oil.

Yea, I'd say you got your moneys worth out of that old gear oil!!!! Mobil 1 will serve you well.
