I have always been a fan of WD-40, and it's effectiveness as a great multi-purpose spray. I was more than happy to continue using the product for various uses, and only rarely used other similar products.

When I was on my latest Wal-Mart trip I decided to pick up a new can of WD-40 when I noticed a line of WD-40 products. I decided to pick up their Specialist Penetrating Spray, and have only used it on couple of projects, but so far I am quite surprised of the improvements. I assumed there would be only a minimal improvement, but I was proven wrong.

I don't have any fun projects to test and compare the product to others, but I do suggest you guys give it a shot. For those who do not know, WD-40 does have other products besides their penetrating spray. They also have a water resistant silicone spray, white lithium grease, rust remover soak, and a long-term corrosion inhibitor that I am very interested in trying out.

Anyway, my recommendation is to check it out. Enjoy.

Thats why I have an awl in the top drawer of my tool box. BTW WD40 Blueworks is way better than regular WD.

I saw the penetrant and also a rust inhibitor on the shelf.

WD-40 was never really a penetrant, more like a drying agent. It makes sense that they have a product with more penetrating ability...

I agree. WD-40 is a great multi-purpose spray, but the company was smart to move on to better things.

Ok. Are you going to give wd-40's specialist a shot? I'd think PB Blaster would be a great comparison item.

Kroil is the only thing I use now as a penetrating lube. I had been a big fan of Liquid Wrench when it was in the can of liquid.

As some people have stated...."Kroil is like PB Blaster on steroids"

I would recommend trying some K&W technician grade "Knocker Loose".

I haven't been able to find it as readily as I used to, but it would break things loose others simply couldn't.

>>> I just did some searching, and it looks like CRC may have bought them out around a year ago. I don't know what to think now. I hope they kept the formula the same and didn't just slap the name onto one of their own products.

I mean this in the most polite way possible, but have any of you who have come onto this thread to suggest other brands even tried the specialist line yet? If not, it seems a bit presumptuous to jump on a thread and make other recommendations. Take care.

I work at lowes and I have been eyeing the "specialist" line for some time now. I was a little suspicious of the rust release formula since it had the same smell and consistancy as regular wd 40. It also seems they now have a "long term corrosion inhibitor" now as well.

I am interested in the long-term corrosion inhibitor as well. I know I don't need it, but the claims are intriguing.

Picked up a can this morning, will be comparing it side by side to Penetro 90, Pb blaster and drummond open and shut. I'll either post here with my own results or start a thread. Any recommendations for comparing these and getting as close of results as possible?

I would think the only reliable way to test multiple penetrating oils would be to find something with a heavy metal, and bolts; make sure they are all torqued down with the same lb of force; speed up the rust process; and then go to town with your test. I am drawing a blank for a good suggestion on the testing media though.

Curious how or if they would work on battery terminals....? Then again, granted, there are "other" specialized products geared towards treating as well as killing away corrosion from terminals, posts, etc...hehe.

But yea, I too noticed these new products....but haven't found a use for them yet around the house.

I have, I'm in the Navy on a ship so I have quite the test lab to try out different things in harsh conditions. Not just lubricants, but tools, cleaners, sealants, all sorts of stuff I find to be the best I buy with my own $$$ and keep in my locker.

Specifically I prefer the LW clingy-foamy-ness.

I used WD40's penetrating oil specialist a few times. Overall IMHO works pretty well. I managed to get all the fasteners off the 10 year shocks from my plow truck's shocks when I did them a few weeks ago. Not bad considering I live right off state highway that does its best Bonneville impression in the winter thanks to Mass DOT.

I soaked the tone ring of my wife's Mercury Mariner in their rust protector or whatever spray... hopefully that will help keep the ring from cracking like the old one did.
