Hi All,
This is a summary of the Blackstones report on my last oil change after 10,000 km on Liqui Moly 5/40 Synthoil High Tech. The Volvo V40 1.9 turbo diesel is the same basic block as the Renault Laguna 1.9D, so they gave me those averages to compare with and the engine has 180,000 km total.

Oil added: Nil (Used about 0.3 ltr)
Aluminium 5 (Average from Renault diesel 8)
Iron 24 (46)
Chromium 1 (4)
Copper 5 (5)
Lead 2 (5)
Tin 2 (5)
Moly 3 (4)
Nickel 2 (1)
Maganese 1 (0)
Potassium 5 (1)
Boron 62 (84)
Silicon 11 (14)
Sodium 5 (58)
Calcium 2751 (2428)
Magnesium 8 (246)
Phosphorus 942 (1085)
Zinc 1049 (1209)
The Renault 1.9D block figures in brakets were for an average distance of 7,700 km. The engines do have a slightly different exhaust and turbo system.

Viscosity 210F 67.9 (Should be 66 to 78)
Viscosity 100C 12.4 (SB 11.9 to 15.3)
Fuel less than 0.5% (SB less than 2)
Antifreeze and water nil
Insolubles 0.4% (SB less than 0.8)
TBN 4.7

In general the wear metals were half of the Renault figures and the TBN plus insolubles indicate the oil would be good for a longer service interval, which surprised me because we have had a very cold winter and my car does a horrific amount of stop go driving.
I am sticking to doing the oil and filter changes every 10,000km but will try the slightly cheaper LM diesel synthoil 5/40 next to see how it compares.
I only use Liqui Moly oils at present although that is partly because they are good value for money in Germany.

Very promising results.

Cleary you could probably double the average mileage (7700 km 2x) and perhaps even double your 10,000 km OCI, but working towards that point you'd want to keep a keen eye on the TBN.

If you stick to the 10,000km OCI, then I'd seek out a lesser expensive oil and see if you can duplicate (or at least come close to) these results.

I'd stay at this OCI, viscosity as if 0/30 oil already.

The fact the viscosity has fallen to the SAE 30 range is fine, as an 5/30 oil is used by Volvo and listed in the handbook, however I have no intention of jumping from a 10 to a 20k oil & filter change interval as listed by Volvo and LM. I don't know what the viscosity would do with double the distance AND the car does a lot of stop start driving.
The TBN is an issue as I don't know how much sludge or varnish was accumulated before I purchased this car, as it was doing 20k services and using mostly 10/40 Ford dino oil, so I want to keep that TBN nice and high, although I did run some LM flush before the first change to synthetic.
I have 2 choices next oil change, firstly to extend the oil & filter change interval to 15k km and add a small amount of extra LM Motor protect at 10k to keep the TBN high, OR secondly to do an oil only change at 10k and then the full service at 20k and see what the UOA looks like after the 20k change.
