my truck was originally bought in alaska back in 1987. what weight of oil was available there back then? I'm in the desert and only see 15w40 and 5w40(rarely) here.

Chose the oil for where you will be using it, not for where it came from.
Sure it probably had a thinner oil used in it for Alaska, if it did not it probably would be scrap by now.
But if you are not going to be driving it to Alaska why would you put a thin oil in it now?

I think they used 15W40 or SAE20 / SAE30 and just plugged it in.
My old 6.2L saw only 15W40 for it's 478K mile life, even in winter.

Quite likely. Plenty of 0w-40, 5w-40, 0w-30, and 10w-30 HDEOs exist and are readily available up here at least.
