After extensive MSDS searching I've discovered that Versatrak fluid is actually Castrol 75W-140 SAF-XJ gear oil.

I have successfully eliminated RDM groan in my 2002 Chevy Venture by using a synthetic 75w140 gear oil that has friction modifiers already included.

MSDS for comparison.

XJ is an LSD diff oil recommended/used by BMW.

Wonder if you can find a cheaper source.

Autotrak II is just blue ATF, right? Neither of these have any specialty adds, right?

nice first post.. but you cant determine that from a msds.. so there is no hard evidence to support your opinion that they are the same.

They do however look very similar.

Wouldn't "SECTION 3: Composition/information on ingredients" being identical other than "Base oil - unspecified" indicate that they are the same or very close to the same? All the percentages of ingredients are identical.

Not all ingredients are required to be listed on an MSDS. I'm not saying that these fluids are NOT the same, but simply saying that they may contain more than what an MSDS shows. Look at any MSDS for motor oil. It likely just indicates heavy petroleum distillates or similar. None of the other additives (like sodium, boron, etc) are listed on an MSDS.

According to the MSDS links, the viscosity of the 75W-140 (24.7cSt @ 100C) is more than twice the viscosity of the Versatrak (11.53cSt @ 100C). These are not the same fluids.

I am pleased to see that you are satisfied with your Versatrak replacement. However, we now one more false statement for search engines to find.

By the way, the pour points and flash points are different too.
